Praying for Our President-elect

The presidential election of 2008 is in the history books. We have a new President-elect and his name is Barrack Hussein Obama. Now if you voted as I did, you may very well be disappointed with that fact. But while we may be disappointed, let us not be disheartened.

It is true, I will not see my candidate move into the oval office but God is still on the throne and He is still in control! Jesus said in John 14:1, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.” As Christians our trust should never be in political candidates or worldly rulers, but our trust must be in the Supreme Ruler of the Universe – Jesus Christ, King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Presidents come and presidents go but Jesus Christ is forever and it is in God that we trust.

An extremely wise man once wrote, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.” (Proverbs 3:5-7) That is what we must do today. We must trust in God and allow Him to direct our paths. Believe me when I say that God was not surprised by the outcome of the election and it did not rattle Him one bit. As I often say, “I am so glad that God knows what He is doing even when I do not.”

Over the past several weeks I have spoken out against President-elect Obama and have urged others to do the same. But the time for campaigning is over and so we must now pledge our support and show our respect to the man who will become the 44th President of the United States. In Romans 13 we are admonished by Paul to respect our governmental leaders. Read his words for yourself in Romans 13:1-7.

I now urge you to join with me in supporting and praying for President-elect Obama. Pray that God will be the number one priority in his life. I can try to guess the man’s relationship with God, but Matthew 7:1 teaches; Do not judge, or you too will be judged. But I do pray that regardless of the condition of his heart during the campaign and at the time of his election, that now his heart will become consumed by the love, mercy, and grace of Almighty God. That he will walk in an intimate, personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. And finally that he will live his life and lead this nation in a manner that submits to God’s will and brings glory to Christ Jesus.

Pray that God will give President-elect Obama wisdom as he begins the process of selecting his cabinet. This is very crucial. Proverbs 15:22 says, Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. It is of utmost important that the right people are placed in these positions of leadership. We must pray that President-elect Obama will look to God’s will and listen to God’s voice for these critical appointments.

There is so much to pray for, but the main thing is to pray that as a nation we will do exactly as God demands in II Chronicles 7:14: “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” This is the key to America’s future. Not those who may temporarily hold power, but the Christians of America living as Christians in this land. That means showing love, not anger and hate. It means controlling our tongue and not participating in the racial slurs and innuendos that have been so common during the election. It means seeking God and obeying His will for our lives, whatever that may be. Only then can we see our land healed and this nation once again restored to the “greatest nation on the face of the earth.”

God Bless!
