a Family Christmas Devotional
“The First Christmas Rush”
by Dwayne Moore
Start by reading Luke 2:1-20
Mention the words, “Christmas rush,” around people and watch their eyes roll and heads wag. No one has to tell us what a headache the Christmas rush can be each year. And few of us get any pleasure from last-minute shopping or standing in those long lines at the post office!
However, the first “Christmas rush” was quite different from the materialistic mayhem this most sacred holiday has now become for so many of us. Those who celebrated that first Christmas were actually glad to be in a hurry. Listen to what the shepherds did when they heard the news of Jesus’ birth:
“When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.’ So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.”(Luke 2:15-16 NIV)
In verse 15, we get a sense of the shepherds’ excitement about the angels’ announcement. But notice verse 16. It says they “hurried” to Bethlehem and found exactly what they were looking for. This was the first “Christmas rush!” It was not a rush for the perfect present or the lowest price; rather, it was a rush to praise the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords!
Take time to worship your Lord and Savior this Christmas. Hurry to show your love for Him who died in your place. Rush to adore Jesus the Christ before and above all else…
Merry CHRISTmas from our entire team at Next Level Worship International!
