Dwayne Moore:
Scot, I’d like to talk a little bit more specific about the congregation. We’ve talked a lot about the staff. How do you bring that over to the congregation on a weekly basis? Where does the weekend services come into that as far as… How important are the weekend services, do you feel like, in moving a congregation forward in the vision?

Scot Longyear:
Yeah, well, I think, Dwayne, they’re paramount. That’s why you and I are so fired up about worship, about our own personal connection to the Lord in worship, and about worship leaders and churches. I mean, I’ve never run into anybody who’s like, “Man, here’s this amazing church. They’re moving. I’m fully in. The weekend is completely trash and is like nobody really knows what they’re doing there, but they’re really nice people and it’s amazing and they’re changing the world.”

Scot Longyear:
To say it’s part, it’s so much more than part. If you are in any type of worship leadership and you’re feeling like it’s just songs, you’re completely wrong. If you’ve had somebody devalue you as a worship leader or just say, “Worship is a warmup to the sermon,” that is nonsense. It is not at all. Think about what scripture says, worship has been going on throughout all of history, and it’s going to go on throughout all of eternity in Heaven around the throne, speaking, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord.” It’s not going away. So, is it important? It is deeply important.

Here’s what I tell our worship leaders. Sometimes, they feel like they’re inferior or they feel like their role maybe isn’t as important. It is highly important because you’re doing some of the greatest work in the world because you are connecting people with Jesus, you’re connecting people with the Holy Spirit, you’re connecting people with Father God through worship. Here’s the truth. I spend an inordinate amount of time, and you do, too, Dwayne, as you’re preparing your teachings and all that, you’re preparing all this and then you preach, and they forget what I say by Wednesday, but they’re still singing the songs.

So, you’re teaching theology through your songs. They’re engaging in a song as they’re driving or they’re walking, and they’re engaging in that song that they’ve heard on Sunday. So, it is of paramount importance. When you ask someone, “Tell me about a time when you encountered the Lord.” Some will say, “Man, I was by myself and this happened.” “I was staring at this beautiful river or cliff or whatever it was.” But most people, they’ll say, “I was in church. I was in a worship service when I had this encounter with the Lord.” So, you’re able to set and to create an environment for people where they will connect with the Lord.

I used to be a full-time worship leader myself, I think, it’s not like, “Now, here’s preaching and then here’s worship and then here’s this and here’s this,” but it’s all this great medley that happens. I tell our guys and our format here with our team, we’ll do a song to open, and then there’s some welcome announcements, and then there’s another song that sets the sermon up. I tell these guys, “Hey, thanks for preaching the intro to my sermon,” because I’m stepping in already to what God is doing and so it’s this beautiful handshake of what’s going on, right? Now, here’s just a different expression as we go and as we look at the word. I do find in our US churches, it’s probably true throughout the world, as people come and visit a church, they’re talking primarily about three different things. They’re going to talk about the worship experience, they are going to talk about the message, the pastor, what he or she was saying and how it connected, and they’re also going to be talking about the children’s ministry. There are people who will say, “I will endure a less than great worship gathering if my kids are taken care of in an amazing way.” But when all that is really clicking along, then I think it’s fantastic.

But the Sundays for us and the culture that we’re in in the US, there’s still this kind of like, “Sunday is for church.” I know there’s certain people that are doing a weekday service. Thursday is church night for them or whatever, but primarily… especially in the Midwest, it’s Bible Belt traditional. There is that Sunday, and worship is part of that. You see that in the media of our cultures and that nobody is like, “What is this now?” No, this is worship. This is part of all that what we do. It’s very, very important in what we do. Yeah, I think it drives the church, our Sunday gatherings, that somebody said once that the pulpit drives the church. I had another prominent leader once say, “We’ve never had a problem at our church that we couldn’t preach our way out of,” because there’s power in instruction that come from the word. Then when that is married with worship, man, it is so, so, so important. It’s not going away.

To say it’s not going away anytime soon would just be a foolish statement. It’s not going away ever because it will go on throughout all eternity. It’s because we were created to worship God. That’s why something inside of us shifts and changes when you’re in the middle of a worship gathering and, all of a sudden, you realize, “I’m ascribing worth. I’m declaring the greatness of God.” I’m talking about how great God is, how powerful he is. I’m singing about the resurrection. There’s something inside of us that shifts, and we’re coming out of our seat like, “Yes, yes, yes.” Why? Because that’s why we were created, that’s why Christ came and died for us. It wasn’t because we’re the center of the universe. It was so that we could be in relationship with God, to declare his greatness and his goodness.

I mean, find me something more powerful than that. Find me something worth giving your life to more than that. Dwayne, we were talking before. Life’s not easy right now. It hasn’t been easy the past couple years. But you’re probably like me. We’ll sit in a worship gathering, and we’re just like, “All right, that’s why we’re doing it. That’s why we’re doing what we do.” I just had a mentor friend come to speak for us at our church during our worship time. We have a lot of altars that are going on and people coming up for communion. I just turned to him and I said, “Man, best part of my week right here,” because I get to worship but I also get to watch other people worship. I know their stories, and I’m like, “Here’s a marriage that’s coming back together.” Yeah, and seeing the Lord work, it is intoxicating and it’s just where we should be. So, listen, if you’re weary, you have to know this. I’ll just echo the words from the New Testament that say, “Do not grow weary in doing good.” Your work is not in vain. It is important. It is life-changing. You might not ever realize it this side of Heaven, but I guarantee you that there are people that are closer to Jesus because of what you do. So don’t give up.
