Worship Leader Spotlight – Seth Brasher

Worship Pastor at Sherwood Church in Albany, Georgia

By Savannah Cone

With eight years of experience as an associate worship pastor and an interim worship pastor, Seth is now thriving as the new Worship Pastor at Sherwood Church in Albany, Georgia. His journey as a full-time worship pastor began nearly a year ago as his lead pastor and worship pastor were making an exit and soon after his firstborn son. He jumped right into this role asking many questions, seeking advice and “winging it.” Seth prioritizes cultural diversity and tailored development for his teams.

Cultural Diversity

Albany, Georgia is a predominantly African American area. Seth actively seeks ways to include African American culture into their worship services. His goal is to create a space where “anybody can join in and the Spirit is tangible.” Seth includes hymns, gospel songs, modern worship and in-house songs to their sets. Sherwood’s “high energy” worship service is becoming more diverse musically now more than ever. According to Seth, most of Sherwood’s new attendees are from another culture – “I am excited to see how culturally diverse we are becoming.”

With Seth’s passion to see every culture represented in their worship services, he uses their Sunday evening services to help introduce new or unfamiliar songs. Seth recommends “Taking time during a pad to share the intent and purpose of the song” so the congregation may begin to grasp the concept of the song more clearly moving forward. Often, Seth will say this as he introduces a new song, “This is a new song, let us just sing this over you.” He finds this to be a time to have a dual role, one being the congregation has the opportunity to grasp the melody, and two being they have a moment of reflection and mindful worship.

Tailored Development

During this first year, Seth is learning to be creative in the realm of spiritual development. Seth has two staff members on his team whom he pours into on a regular basis. They read through a book together and discuss it weekly. This is a time he values with his staff to hear their concerns, celebrate praises and hear their hearts. Seth ensures spiritual development throughout all his teams in different ways. For his rather large praise team, he pairs a younger member with a veteran member, holding them responsible for one another’s spiritual care. Since the choir and orchestra are a much larger group, he develops them spiritually by sharing a short devotion during rehearsals, hosting spiritual retreats, and assigning care team leaders. A care team leader is responsible for meeting people’s needs. Care team leaders often handle meal trains, have celebrations, take care of hospital visits and serve as Seth’s eyes and ears for the needs of his team.
