Worship Leader Spotlight – Drew Bumpas

Worship Pastor at Parkview Baptist Church in Tuscumbia, Alabama

By Savannah Cone

With a decent voice and a guitar in his hand, Drew was grandfathered into his worship team because of his skills at a young age. Drew is celebrating two months in full time ministry as Worship Pastor at Parkview Baptist Church. He has been passionately serving in a part time capacity since 2014. Drew has learned everything he knows about worship ministry from observing other worship leaders and continues to stay teachable. He encourages vision-casting, team culture, and quality musicianship.

Vision-Casting

“I love my team because they are on board with the mission and are super flexible.” One of the many lessons Drew has learned in his 20 years of worship ministry is when people capture vision well, they will be willing to try new things and willing to jump-in where needed. Drew is sure to explain the mission and vision of the worship ministry at Parkview Baptist as part of the onboarding process for all team members. He believes since they are on board with the vision, this allows them to be more flexible and more open-minded to try new things.

Team Culture

With his team all on the same page about vision, he can embrace a strong team culture. Two ways Drew cultivates a positive team culture is by using their green-room time as their small group time and hosting a bimonthly jam session. Drew values spiritual development, and because many of his worship team members are in other leadership positions in the church, they use their time backstage as their time to build community and relationships. Drew calls their bimonthly jam session “Party Rock on the Porch,” or “PROP.” Every two months they select a handful of secular songs to rehearse and perform at someone’s house. This is a great opportunity for new musicians to learn and experienced musicians to thrive. “With musicians being under a lot of pressure in this area, this is a fun and relaxing activity for our team to experience together.”

Quality Musicianship

Tuscombia, Alabama has many skilled musicians, challenging every local worship ministry to bring their best. Drew sends his setlist along with a Spotify playlist a month in advance giving his team ample time to rehearse and prepare. He uses Praise Charts for key players and pianists, but allows everyone else to use basic chord charts. “I expect a little more out of my vocalists, so I buy them lunch and we rehearse parts.” This gives his vocalists the opportunity to lock into their parts and get comfortable with each other before stepping on the platform.

Drew Bumpas received a bachelor of science in Communications and Entertainment Publicity Promotions from the University of North Alabama. He has experience in directing choirs, giving guitar lessons and participating in praise bands.
