From Worship to Influence: The Flow That Multiplies Your Ministry

By Dwayne Moore

I want to share with you what I recently taught at our ReNew Conference in New England. This is a practical teaching that has completely reshaped my perspective. Often, we get caught up in the logistics: the tech, the setlists, and the rehearsal schedules. But if we step back, we see that worship is not just something we do; it is something that moves. It is a living, breathing flow that originates in the heart of God and is designed to ripple out into the world.

Have you ever felt like your praise team or your congregation is just going through the motions of worship? We’ve all been there. We find ourselves aiming for a “great service” rather than a lasting movement. But true worship is a movement that begins with Him, transforms us, and ultimately reaches them.

Let’s look at how we can move from simply “doing” worship to becoming a conduit of influence that multiplies ministry.

The Three Directions of Worship

When we talk about whole-life worship, we are talking about a lifestyle that moves in three distinct directions. If any one of these is missing, the flow is blocked, and our influence is limited.

1. Inward: The Work of Formation (From God)

Worship always begins with what God is doing in us. Before we ever open our mouths to sing or pick up an instrument to play, He is already at work. He is drawing us, forming us, and shaping our hearts. This is the essence of worship discipleship.

In this inward phase, He transforms our desires and renews our minds (Romans 12:2). As a church leader, you must realize that you cannot lead others where you haven’t been yourself. Formation is about establishing our identity as worshipers first and “performers” or “leaders” second. It’s about the quiet moments of Scripture, prayer, and obedience that happen when the stage lights are off.

2. Upward: The Work of Expression (Toward God)

What God forms within us must be expressed back to Him. This is the “upward” movement: the praise, thanksgiving, surrender, and devotion that we lift to the One who is worthy. This is the moment where our praise team leads the congregation to focus solely on the “Audience of One.”

Worship is not complete until it is expressed. Think of it like a conversation; God speaks through His Word and Spirit (Inward), and we respond with our hearts and voices (Upward). When we express our worship, we are acknowledging His sovereignty and His grace.

3. Outward: The Work of Multiplication (Toward Others)

Here is where many of us stop, but where the real influence begins. True worship flows beyond us. It engages people. It multiplies. When worship is real, it becomes visible in how we live before others.

If our worship doesn’t move us toward compassion, mission, and service, we have to ask ourselves if we’ve truly encountered the Living God. As we see in our Africa Spring Mission Tour, worship that doesn’t result in outward influence is a stagnant pool, not a flowing river.

The Flow of Influence: He → We → They

If we understand the direction, we can see the result: Influence.

Worship doesn’t just shape individuals; it multiplies through people. At Next Level Worship, we use a simple framework to describe this: He → We → They.

  • He (The Lord) is the focus. Everything starts and ends with Him. He is the source of the flow.
  • We (The Leaders) are formed. Both men and women leaders must allow themselves to be the first “responders” to God’s grace. We are the vessels the flow passes through.
  • They (The People) are engaged. As we lead from a place of authentic formation and expression, the congregation is drawn into that same flow.

When these elements align, inward worship forms the leader, upward worship expresses the leader’s heart, and outward worship multiplies the leader’s impact. This is how movements begin. It’s how a small bible study group can turn into a catalyst for community-wide change.

From Understanding to Action: Leading the Movement

The question for us today is: How do we lead people into this flow? It’s one thing to understand the theory; it’s another to implement worship discipleship in our local churches. Here are three practical ways to start.

1. Facilitate Inward Formation

People cannot express what has not first been formed in them. As a lead worshipper, your job is to create space for spiritual growth.

  • Share the Gospel Clearly: Don’t assume everyone knows the “why” behind the “what.”
  • Teach Foundational Truths: Use resources that ground your team in Scripture.
  • Encourage Simple Disciplines: Help your team develop habits of prayer and Scripture reading.

If you’re looking for a place to start, our Pastors Intensive Training is designed specifically to help you build this foundation in your ministry.

2. Encourage Upward Expression

Many people don’t lack passion; they lack permission. They need to know it’s okay to be expressive and authentic in their praise.

  • Teach the Meaning of Praise: Explain why we lift our hands, why we sing, and why we shout.
  • Model Private Praise: Encourage your praise team to worship God in their cars, their homes, and their workplaces before they ever step on a stage.
  • Give Language for Public Praise: Use Scripture to give the congregation words to say to God.

3. Drive Outward Multiplication

If worship never moves outward, it was never fully understood. We must create pathways for our people to serve.

  • Create Clear Opportunities: Whether it’s local outreach or a global mission, give people a way to “do” something with their worship.
  • Train for Witnessing: Help your people learn how to share their faith simply and effectively.
  • Foster a Culture of Prayer: Teach your team to minister to one another and the congregation through prayer.

A Resource for Your Journey

If you want to take your team deeper into this flow, I highly recommend using Pure Praise. This is a heart-focused bible study on worship that has helped thousands of leaders and teams move beyond surface-level songs and into a lifestyle of whole-life worship.

Pure Praise Resource

This resource isn’t just about music; it’s about the heart. It’s about the “He → We → They” movement. It guides you through the process of being formed by God so that you can effectively lead others into His presence. You can find more about it and our other resources at Next Level Worship.

Where Do You Start?

As we wrap up, I want to challenge you to take a moment of honest reflection.

  • Where am I strongest: inward, upward, or outward?
  • Where is the “blockage” in the flow of my ministry?
  • Who am I intentionally helping to move forward in their worship journey?

And most importantly: Where is God inviting you to grow right now?

Don’t just pursue worship as an experience for a Sunday morning. Pursue it as a movement that changes lives Monday through Saturday. When worship flows from God, to God, and through you to others, it doesn’t just impact a moment: it multiplies for eternity.

Let’s be leaders who don’t just “lead songs,” but who lead movements of influence.
